This catalogue is produced on the occasion of the exhibition 'Dorodoro, Doron — The Uncanny World in Folk and Contemporary Art in Asia' held in Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art from March to May 2009. In the Japanese language, 'Dorodoro' and 'Doron' have long been used as expressions denoting the sound of sensation of goblins and ghosts appearing or disappearing. In this exhibition, picture scrolls depicting supernatural beings from ancient folktales and legends, masks used in religious rites, and other historical and folk materials are displayed together with contemporary art works. By presenting art in connection with the world of history and folklore, the exhibition shows the dynamic creative power, born from everyday life, with which people transcend their fears and confront them with humour.
