Part of the Sydney Festival program, 'Edge of Elsewhere' was launched in January 2010 as a partnership between the Campbelltown Arts Centre and 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art that engages contemporary artists from Australia, Asia and the Pacific commissioned to create new works in collaboration with Sydney communities. By engaging with language groups within Sydney's large aboriginal communities, the many established Pacific, Arabic, Chinese and South-East Asian communities, as well as emerging Afghani, East Timorese and Sri Lankan communities, the project aims to investigate the ever-shifting contemporary cultural realities and changing demographic of Sydney, whilst thinking about and imagining our shared cultural futures. 'Edge of Elsewhere' also seeks to help expand the profile of emerging communities and connect them with broader national and international art practices.

Produced to accompany this first exhibition of the project, this publication comprises seven original essays from the curatorial team and independent writers. The essays cover aspects of the project’s curatorial premise, historical analysis and contemporary perspectives on community engaged arts projects, analysis of featured art works, and perspectives on the cultural landscape of Western Sydney. Three Q&A format interviews with project artists are also included, along with images of artwork and documentation of performative works. With artist and curator/contributor biographies.

Please note that only artists of Asian descent are listed below. Other artists include: Brook Andrew, Richard Bell, Newell Harry, Lisa Reihana, and Khaled Sabsabi.
