The catalogue for a solo exhibition of the Chinese American artist, Emily Cheng. Her paintings are filled with a fascination with rhythm and movement, suggested by the flowing draperies and fabrics of characters taken from both Chinese and Western paintings. Through her stylized human forms, Cheng is searching for reconciliation between East and West, and searching for equilibrium. The artist herself has once declared, ‘I’m looking at art that I love, paintings that I find fascinating; for me it’s about the pleasure and complexity of visuality. I also use these images to enrich meaning, to formulate a meaning that is mine and not one that I have inherited.
