This publication is a compilation of papers presented at a three-day international symposium in May 2008 organized by Singapore Art Museum, held in conjunction with the exhibition 'Post-Doi Moi: Vietnamese Art After 1990'. The symposium was the first of its kind with a concentration on modern and contemporary visual art of a Southeast Asian country, examining the developments that took place in Vietnam since the colonial period until the present. Speakers from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Australia, Vietnam and Singapore also addressed differences in the developments in the North and the South. The essays are further complemented by important contributions whose authors are key players in the field of Vietnamese art.

Vietnamese translations and authors' biographies are provided.
