Published in conjunction with a travelling exhibition first shown at the Iberia Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, from June to August 2011. It features a group of painters born in the late 1970s and early 80s, who came of age during China's most rapid period of change following the end of the Cultural Revolution. Curator Zhu Zhu states in an opening essay, 'Artists of the previous generation, born in the Sixties, tend to emphasize idealism and heroic mentality, with a critical stance which polarizes the relation of self to society, whereas artists of subsequent generation (80s and 90s) tend to view entertainment and consumerism as a way of life. In contrast to these two tendencies, artists born in the 70s were exposed to a welter of currents as they came of age; they experienced free-fall and fragmentation in a time of suspended moral judgments and indefinite value standards. Occupying this wrinkle in the fabric of history is analogous to being situated in our earthly troposphere. In such a setting one either gives in to fear and aphasia, or one initiates a turnabout.'

Interviews and commentaries on each artist's work are included in this catalogue. Appendix includes a chronology outlining national and world events from 1975 to 2010 in parallel with developments in the art field and the life trajectories of the artists. Artist biographies are also provided.
