This publication is part of a series documenting the projects of BMW Art Journey recipients.

'In August 2015, Hong Kong sound artist Samson Young (b. 1979) embarked on a two-month-long, worldwide journey to visit iconic bells, documenting them and creating works of art and music in response to them. The bells served as a muse and conceptual anchor for his epic project, For Whom the Bell Tolls: A Journey into the Sonic History of Conflict, which was the point of departure for this volume. Across five continents and twelve countries, Young explored the multidimensional meanings of bells, both as sonorous objects and as ideological, political, and religious emblems of their respective communities.

This travelogue contains Samson Young's travel diary, along with key works that have resulted from his ongoing project thus far, including a suite of "soundscape sketches," which translate into colors, forms, and snippets of text the aural landscape of each bell, as well as So You Are Old by the Time You Reach the Island, a multimedia walking piece that premiered at Art Basel in Hong Kong in 2016.' - from the front flap
