This booklet is produced in occasion of the group exhibition organised by and held at Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai, from April to August 2013. Works by a total number of 26 artists from both Asia and the West are shown: a lot of them are borrowed from the collection of the Louvre, while some others are specially commissioned works. It is co-curated by Pascal Torres, Curator of Chalcography Department of the Louvre, and Larys Frogier, Director of the Rockbund.

Structured around the concept and practice of writing, 'From Gesture to Language' extends to explore the relationship between concepts and creation. This exhibition amasses diverse forms of writing from the eighteenth century to the present day, including historical texts, prints, as well as videos, installations and performance works by contemporary artists. By putting these together the exhibition aims to break through traditional method of categorisation and make visible previously hidden linkages centring language across cultures. This allows the spectator to see how artists no matter they are in Asia or in the West, from the past or the present, have in common when contemplating conceptual expressions.

Includes guided interpretations of the exhibition and its concepts, details of educational programmes, as well as biographies of the curators.

Please note that only Asian artists are indexed. Other participating artists include Georg Baselitz, Louise Bourgeois, Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon, Raphaël Denis, Philippe Favier, Franz Gertsch, Jenny Holzer, André Kneib, François Morellet, Zoran Music, Robert Morris, Bruce Nauman, Giuseppe Penone, Arnulf Rainer, Cécile Reims, Martin Salazar, Kiki Smith, Jean-Philippe Toussaint, Terry Winters.
