This is the catalogue of Gieve Patel's painting exhibition at Gallery Chemould and Vadehra Art Gallery. According to Ranjit Hoskote, Patel has long been preoccupied with the manner in which the rural and the urban encounter and modify each other in the post-colonial Indian experiece. In this recent suite of paintings, executed over 2001-2003, Patel presents the audience not with a neat dichotomy of urban and rural, but with an interpenetration of the two. Patel also offers the audience a range of dramatis personae from the margins of metropolitan life: a man in the rain; a scribe and his client; and a madman. Under the focus of Patel's gaze, they emerge from their marginality to command one's attention as vital presences.
