After focusing on photographing his hometown of Tokyo for many years, photographer Takanashi Yutaka left in 1983 to photograph other areas of Japan.  He wanted to reveal "the origins of all Japanese and this county called Japan."  These photographs were published in 1993 in a volume entitled Hatsukuni.   This works containts some clevely angled shots that show how insubstantial structures are slowly smothering ancient holy sites in Okinawa, Izumo, Kyoto, Kumano and Shikoku etc.  while other photos show new beginnings.
