Catalogue of solo exhibition by Guo Jian at Canberra Contemporary Art Space in 2000. Nicholas Jose wrote, 'Guo Jian is the joker in the pack of artists from China who have made their name in Australia over the last decade. He is a fabulist, a performer, a trickster, and a storyteller. The stories he tells in his paintings draw on his own life experiences, exaggerated and transformed into hallucinogenic visions with a high charge of eroticism and violence. Just as China has turned somersaults of political and social change, so Guo Jian's art is acrobatic in its defiance of boundaries. His paintings are bright, bloated assemblages of icons and caricatures in which he depicts himself many times over as the central reference, toting the warm gun that brings happiness as the ultimate benefit of revolution.' Artist biography is provided in the catalogue.
