Catalogue published on the occasion of Han Lei's exhibition 'Han Lei / In Between' at Taikang Space from March to June 2010. His black and white snapshots from the 1980s and 90s depicting ordinary people and scenes in villages in Northern China are accompanied by test strips and darkroom prints that provide insight into Han's vision and creative process at the time. The show also features some of his recent colour photographs. Most notable of these are the staged portraits of migrant workers who are dressed in tacky costumes and are posing awkwardly — the effect is both comical and disharmonious, a reminder of their struggles in the Chinese metropolises.
