This is the catalogue of a retrospective exhibition of Hisao Domoto at The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto and Setagaya Art Museum, Tokyo. Featured in the catalogue are works from the period 1951-2005, including new works that are displayed for the first time in public. These works manifests even greater confidence in his own native aesthetic sensibility, and even greater freedom in its expression. Shinichiro Osake wrote, 'In the five decades since his debut, Hisao Domoto has been remarkably active in the forefront of modern art while constantly changing painting styles. His intense creativity has never flagged as he moved from Kyoto to Paris, New York, and eventually Tokyo. Domoto has not only been one of Japan's foremost abstract painters, he is that rare artist endowed with the distinctive aura of the artist-myth.'
