Catalogue published in conjunction with Hung Liu's solo exhibition 'Prodigal Daughters' at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery, Hong Kong from November 2009 to January 2010. The artist was born in China in 1948 and emigrated to the United States in 1984. Her paintings and prints make use of anonymous Chinese historical photographs, particularly those of women, refugees and soldiers as subject matter. The current series is based on the communist propaganda film Daughters of China (1949), which left a great impression on her as a child. In the film, a group of female soldiers, carrying their injured leader, choose to drown in a river rather than surrender to the Japanese. A detailed biography and CV is included in the present catalogue.
