This catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition Im Gegenlicht by Kazuo Katase held at Hillside Gallery and Art Front Gallery in 1994. Katase was born in Japan in 1947 and moved to Germany in 1975. 'The installation Im Gegenlicht (Behind the Light) included an enlarged negative photograph of the entrance to a small shrine at the Ise Shrine, some wax, and laced shoes. As an ensemble, the items become a shrine that symbolizes power and, conversely, symbolizes man's helplessness, suggesting the idea of God that has been handed down traditionally from ages past in every country in the world. Transcending specifically Japanese shrines, as well as this specific shrine, the installation also symbolizes man's creative, structuring activity.' - excerpt from essay by Kazuhiro Yamamoto.
