This is the catalogue of the exhibition ‘Innovation within Tradition: The Painting of Huang Pin-hung’, which was held in Williams College Museum of Art (USA) and Taipei Fine Arts Museum (Taiwan) in 1989 and 1990 respectively. Huang Pin-hung was one of the most significant intellectual figures in the early twentieth century who advocated a reform in art through ‘innovation within tradition’. He made in-depth studies in traditional literati paintings and techniques. The accompanying essays presented here offer a detailed account of the artistic development of Huang Pin-hung and the contribution he made to the study of the literati painting tradition.
