The exhibition entitled ‘Japanese Women Artists before and after World War II, 1930s-1950s’ held at Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts from October to December 2001 features 137 works by 48 female artists. Majority of them practiced western oil paintings, while some worked within the nihonga (Japanese-style painting) tradition or adopted new technique such as photography or collage. The present catalogue includes essays written in Japanese with English summaries, artist biographies, chronology and bibliography.
