The works by Korean artist Bae Joonsung look like conventional portrait paintings from a distance. A closer look will reveal that the images are in fact produced by photographic background and painted plastic sheet. The plastic sheet can be lifted up to show the photographic image underneath. Thus, Bae's works are not only conventional paintings, for it is through the gesture of 'lifting up' which suggests voyeurism that Bae conveys his message: the collision between social restrictions and instinctive desire. The present monograph brings together artworks produced in 2005. Artist biography is included.
