Matsumi Kanemitsu was born in Utah in America in 1922, who spent his childhood in Hiroshima, Japan. At the age of 16, he travelled to America. He was a painter in the U.S. army camp during WWII, and this gave him the opportunity to come into contact with Western art and culture as they went to Europe.

Matsumi Kanemitsu was an active artist in New York in the 1950s and 1960s, and then in Los Angeles in the latter half of the 1960s through the 1990s. He passed away in 1992.

This is the catalogue of the posthumous retrospective exhibition of the artist, showcasing artworks spanning over 50 years of Kanemitsu's career and presented here in 7 chapters. A chronology of the artist's activities is provided. With bibliography.
