'Kokei Kobayashi (1883-1957) was an artist who played a key role in the development of modern nihonga (Japanese-style painting). Amidst a whirlpool of new trends in art, which were brought from the West between the Taisho and Showa periods, the world of nihonga was brought under considerable pressure. However, while taking root deep in the intrinsic characteristics of nihonga, Kokei continued to create paintings fit for the new modern era.' – excerpt from foreword by the organisers. This retrospective exhibition showcases 124 drawings and paintings by Kokei. Included in the catalogue are a list of the Kokei's seals, choronology of the artist and selected bibliographies.
