Learning from Hangzhou takes its cue from the seminal work Learning from Las Vegas by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, who have contributed a foreword to this book. It is an extended photo essay with brief, incisive texts that examine the transformative influence of China's unbridled economic expansion on the public spaces, architecture and signage in the historical city of Hangzhou. Included are thousands of images taken between 2003 and 2008, organized into patterns of reoccurring visual phenomenon. With this project, Mathieu Borysevicz attempts to record what "will otherwise vanish into the forgotten lineage of China's amnesiac race into the future."
