Catalogue of exhibition by two Japanese avant-garde photographers at Art Gallery New South Wales in 1999. 'Nakayama Iwata & Nojima Yasuzo were two of many highly innovative photographers working in Japan who ensured the transition from Art Photography to New Photography. One was an aesthete and a patron, the other a working photographer who could operate on many levels from advertising to portraiture to evocative expressions of interior states. By the end of the 1930s, avant-garde photography in Japan had been harnessed to the purposes of the state but the work achieved by these two together through the pages of Koga, and separately through their individual experiments is indicative of the brief and energetic flowering of individual expression in the context of New Photography.' Artist biography is provded in the catalogue.
