Living in the Material World: 'Things' in Art of the 20th Century and Beyond is the inaugural exhibition of The National Art Center, Tokyo. The aim of the exhibition is to follow the development of art from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present day and explore its relationship with material society. The exhibition is divided into three parts. The first concentrates on the presentation of 'things' and their artistic expression, the second focuses on the relationship of 'things' to people's lives and society, providing a general overview of art in the material age that was the twentieth century, and the third presents a group exhbiition by six contemporary artists who are interested in the position and status of art in the present, material cutlure, thereby exploring the relationship that exists between art and the material world from three different viewpoints.
