Published in conjunction with the exhibition 'Lost and Found: Queerying the Archive' at Nikolaj Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center from May to August 2009 and Bildmuseet Umeå University from February to April 2010.

"The exhibition Lost and Found: Queerying the Archive addresses two major themes that have been a focus of research and contemporary art in recent years. One of them is the concept of queer, which since Judith Butler's seminal text Gender Trouble (1990) — demonstrating that gender roles are not innate but learned, and defining queer as a realm of possibility for genders — has played a major role for contemporary artists and analyses in the humanities. The second is the concept of the archive, which with texts like Jacques Derrida's Archive Fever — A Freudian Impression (1995), has been a focus of research in the formation of history and identity.

Lost and Found: Queerying the Archive brings these two fields together with works by artists who address the archive in their investigation of gendered experiences. The 13 invited artists work with photography, video or found materials, using real or fictive archives in their examination and reinterpretation of neglected, forgotten or suppressed memories and experiences. The goal of the exhibition is not merely to show that certain sexualities have been historically unacceptable, but also that gender, gender roles and sexuality are not clearly defined entities, and that identity can, if we and the world are willing, be a vast and diverse field." - Foreword by Elisabeth Delin Hansen & Jan-Erik Lundstrom
