Luis Chan was one of the most renowned Hong Kong artists in the 20th century. He was a self-taught painter and he had never received any formal training from art schools. In 1927 he took the correspondence course from the Press Art School in London. Since then he had occupied himself in activities of artistic experimentation. This catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition ‘Luis Chan: Fifty Years of Artistic Career’. It presents works done by Luis Chan since 1935, offering the readers a retrospective look at the development of his art from 1935 to 1984. During this period of time, Chan had been persistently in search for new ideas and new forms. He had attempted experimentations in Cubism, Surrealism and Abstract Illusionism, and had produced works in various medium including oil painting, watercolours, collage, Chinese painting and spray painting. This publication provides a chronology of Luis Chan’s life and his artistic activities, and a list of his most frequently used seals.
