'The artist's visual forms creatively express their individual response to the many contradictions that exist in Taiwan today: island vs. country, rural vs. urban, agricultural vs. industrial, international vs. Chinese, connection with the society vs. alienation from it. These contemporary artists, like past Chinese artists, continue to use both man and earth as major themes. Moreover, they seem to be equally influenced by Chinese and Western art. However, the paintings of these artists have been infused with their innermost feelings, resulting in works that are bold, dynamic and nonconformist in nature. Like the artists who have created it, the very best of contemporary art in Taiwan is thematically wide-ranging, curious, and independent. It moves quickly, even aggressively, in the wake of change.' - abstract from preface by Julie Segraves, Director of the Asian Art Coordinating Council. Also included are artist's biographies.
