Catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition 'Meng Huang - Waterscapes' held at Galerie Urs Meile Beijing - Lucerne, Switzerland in 2006. Meng Huang's large scale paintings often 'translate the natural chromatic scale into a spectrum of many different, subtle nuances of "black", which create evocative atmospheres and transform reality into a different, fully subjective, at times even disquieting entity. The canvasses vibrate with a multitude of nervous and diverse brushstrokes, each of which is like a "question mark" that the artist uses to punctuate his personal interrogation of the world. The subjects are mainly landscapes or elements thereof (a pond, a cloud), excerpts from the natural environment the artist is familiar with. But, whereas in his earlier works the canvasses hosted earth and sky in equal proportions, and were mainly large visions of distant landscapes often towered over by tall chimneys (for the artist, symbols of his own religious need rather than elements of industrial archaeology), in the present series relatively small portions of nature are expanded upon and "analysed" as in photographic close-ups, so that the viewer is made to concentrate on the details.' —Monica Dematté. Includes artist interviews by Liu Xiaobo and Nataline Colonnello. With artist biography.
