As mentioned in the foreword by Koji YUKIYAMA, director of Yokohama Museum of Art, ‘Nihonga, or Japanese–style painting, is receiving new attention today.’ The six participating artists ‘have found new values and approaches to artistic creation in the aesthetic thinking, subjects, styles and techniques inherited from classical Japanese painting, especially the Chinese or Japanese style known as Yamato-e, Kara-e, Kanga, that were lost or discarded in the process of developing Nihonga during the period of modernization. They have incorporated these older approaches in developing ambitious new works that do not fit previous categories of Nihonga.’
