This catalogue was published on the occasion of an exhibition entitled On Kawara: Consciousness. Meditation. Watcher on the Hills organised by Ikon Gallery, Birmingham and Le Consortium, Dijon. This was the most comprehensive exhibition of work by On Kawara in the UK to date. It exemplified the artist's ongoing preoccupation with the nature of human consciousness. The exhibition has been touring worldwide since 2002.
The catalogue features Kawara's One Million Years and telegrams sent by the artist to friends and colleagues since 1970, bearing just the message 'I am still alive'. Also included are documentations of the making of his date paintings and articles about his project Pure Consciousness which involved the display of the date paintings in nursary schools around the world (Australia in 1998, Iceland in 1999, Ivory Coast in 2000, China in 2000, Colombia in 2001, Turkey in 2001 and Sweden in 2002).
