Catalogue of Merrill Lynch's private collection of Chua Ek Kay's works which began in 1988 when a set of four pieces of calligraphy were purchased. Forty paintings dating from 1991-99 were selected for this publication and each illustration is accompanied by comments from both artist and author. Includes an essay by Constance Sheares, in which she says, "He wants to invent and yet preserve the spirit of the old traditions. For, whilst seeking out the new and the individualistic he continues to draw from his traditional training, painting images which are a blend of both past and modern styles. His most recent work combines the calligraphic style of ink painting with aspects of Western art, particularly aspects which correspond closely to traditional Chinese taste and values." - p.10.
