This catalogue accompanies an exhibition of the same title, organised by Russell Ferguson. Part of The Three M Project, a series co-presented by the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York.

'Patty Chang's new project Shangri-La (2005) represents an exciting new direction for the artist. Previously working primarily in performance and video with herself as the subject, Chang's new exhibition examines the idea of Shangri-La, the fictional location of James Hilton's 1933 novel Lost Horizon and a much-imagined heaven on earth. The new video, shot in a rural farming town in south-central China near the Tibetan border, considers the reality and fiction of a place that exists in both actual and mythical incarnations. In addition to the video, Chang also presents a related sculpture.' - from the Foreword
