Performing Identities: Performative Practices in Post-Handover Hong Kong Art & Activism
This is the thesis submitted by artist and researcher wen yau for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Hong Kong Baptist University in June 2018. It is printed in limited edition of 20 copies. The thesis focuses on performative practices and the performativity of artists and their activist counterparts in the Umbrella Movement (2014, Hong Kong). The author proposes a methodology of 'performative autoethnography' which accentuates the co-performative and intersubjective process as well as the non-textual aspects of embodied experience and of performing struggle in activism. A brief timeline of the Umbrella Movement as well as a portfolio of the author's work in relation to activism and the Umbrella Movement are included.

The selected publications on this page present the varied ways artists, curators, and researchers experiment with performance. For some, performance is a way to defy the commodification of art, a physical intervention into dominant narratives, or an enactment that eludes state control. Performance may be a protest that takes place in the theatre, on the streets, in a café, or in a private setting. For others, it is experimentation with the form: a transformation, appropriation, or expansion of dance, theatre, and film.
