It is an anthology of essays and text that sheds light on psychoanalytic theory, with a special focus on the masochistic. The extensive content written by scholars deals in general with the theoretical dimension of masochism and visuality of art. Other issues covered include the idea of femme fatale, the punished women, literature related to sado-masochism and relevant to artistic practice and interpretation, the social and political implications of masochism in art, and fetishism.

It serves as a supplement to the exhibition 'Phantom of Desire: Visions of Masochism in Art' held in Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz, Austria from April to August 2003, curated by Peter Weibel (editor of the book).

Includes notes on contributors.
