'Most works shown in this "Social Portraits" exhibit are like archives of my own personal social survey, and include collected photo images, most of which were shot by me over the past several years. At first, I did it to keep myself entertained, following my own peculiar interests without any particular urge to turn them into formal art works. Later, I found I could classify them into certain subjects and categories. It took me several years to decide whether and how to make this accumulation of material become part of my artwork, as I often thought these materials were the results of my informal investigation of visual cultura and a scrapbook of my own that could never be counted as art.' - Qiu Zhijie.

The artist has classified his 'archives' into 8 categories, and he has written description for each of these categories, the titles of which can be found in the 'Chapter Headings'. Artist's biography is included.
