'Rejected Collection' is an archive of rejected proposals by Chinese artists from the early 1980s through to the present day. By focusing on the phenomenon of rejected projects, author Biljana Ciric gains a unique perspective on contemporary artistic practice, curatorial criteria, and art's ever-shifting position relative to institutions, the market, and experimentation. Ciric's project also represents a history of the development of Chinese contemporary art from its underground beginnings to its rise to international attention, public acceptance, and institutional support. At the same time, these rejected proposals provide a mirror that reflects back on foreign art institutions and their expectations regarding Chinese art. With artist interviews and the official reasons for each rejection.
