Solo exhibition of works by one of Japan's leading contemporary artists, Saburo Muraoka, jointly organised by the National Museums of Modern Art in Tokyo and Kyoto: 1 Nov 1997-11 Jan 1998 (Tokyo) and 27 Jan-1 Mar 1998 (Kyoto). Known as a pioneer of welded sculpture in Japan with a career that began in the 60s, it was only in the mid-80s that Muraoka successfully visualized his ideas: using a combination of sculpture with natural phenomena stemming from heat, salt, oxygen and sulphur, that embodied the delicate equilibrium of both life-forming and destructive natural forces. Essays by Tohru Matsumoto and Kunio Motoe, plus catalogue notes and biographical information.
