This symposium expands on some key themes presented in the Past in Reverse: Contemporary Art of East Asia exhibition. Borrowing a common practice among cultural producers in the region - using the past to map the future - artist from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea engage a variety of fresh strategies for new interpretations, evaluations, and appropriations of cultural and artistic genealogies. Chinese art critic Li Xianting suggest that, within each culture, artist express disparate feelings depending on regional differences in relation to their shared language or tradition. In presentations and conversations, artists, art historians, critics, and cultural theorists expand on these themes and provide new interpretive frameworks for current trends within the region.
