Both the art of Chen Heng and Ma Yun are rooted in their environment, the Southwest of China, which has always been at the outer reaches of cultural fashion. Due to this geographic reason perhaps, there is an edge of gentle sensuality in their paintings of the everyday life, which makes a contrast to the aggressiveness and anxiety inherent in much of today’s experimental art produced in cities along the eastern coast of the country. The two articles in this catalogue offer an introduction to the works of Ma Yun and Chen Heng. Biographies of the artists are also included.
