Published on the occasion of an exhibition of the same title at the NUS Museum, Singapore in May 2009. It features a series of charcoal paintings by J. Ariadhitya Pramuhendra based on photographs taken at various stages of his childhood. Essays by Shabbir Hussain Mustafa and Aminudin TH Siregar, and the artist's biography are included in this catalogue.
'Informed mostly by the artist's biographical interests and emphasis on reassessing the Self in relation to what constitutes identity, the moral and the social in contemporary Indonesia, Pramuhendra's charcoals have presented momentary petitions for a form of "recognition" which at one level has an understanding of history but at another level almost refuses to articulate it. The Self, it seems, has been a simultaneous subject and object of observation and study, developed through investigations into artifactual constituents of memory, placed conjunctive to idealizations of artistic labor and its accompanying predicaments.' - excerpt from essay by Shabbir Hussain Mustafa
