2007 marks the centenary of the Ministry of Education Fine Arts Exhibition (Bunten), Japan’s first government-sponsored art exhibition. The 100th Anniversary of NITTEN traces the history of government-sponsored exhibitions - from the Bunten to Teiten (Imperial Academy of Fine Art Exhibition), Shin (New) Bunten, and the Nitten [Japan Fine Arts Exhibition] that began after World War II and continues today - through major works of Nihonga (Japanese-style painting), Yoga (Western-style painting), sculpture, crafts, and calligraphy. The retrospective sheds light on the role of government-sponsored exhibition in formulating academism in Japanese art scene and looks back on the trends and achievements in Japanese modern art over the past century.
