This catalogue is published on the occasion of the group exhibition 'The Golden Age' at Ark Galerie, Jakarta in 2009. The exhibition features works by six Indonesian contemporary artist who are in their early fifties. They were all born in the early days of the nation's independence.
'When I began the research for this exhibition, I came to the realisation that it was precisely in their generation that the concept of Indonesian contemporary art became wide open. Unlike artists of the previous generations, the artists who were born in the fifties had all been formed well in the crucible of art institutions. With the academic model of art education and the closing stages of the political transition at the time, these artists have worked in a more stable social situation. One can say that, albeit with references that had not been as vast as those of today's artists, were a part of the early generation of artists who tried to establish some new aesthetic point of view by drawing from what was on the move outside and digging out what bugged them from the inside.
It was also this generation that formed the initial part of the process in which the Indonesian contemporary art became internationalised. In the dynamics of the global art, their works show certian forms that were considered fresh, with the sensibility to process the local and the traditional and, most importantly, to show the explicit social-political context.' - excerpts from Alia Swastika's essay.
Includes artists biographies.
