The present catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition entitled The Movement of Images at Centre Pompidou in 2006. The image in motion, a quintessential phenomenon of the 20th century, affects the visual arts in all their many facets. Though static, painting strove, for example, to represent movement in the early avant-garde movements of the 1910s. Film escaped from the darkened auditorium and found its way into Museum rooms. The present exhibition offers a re-reading of both 20th century art and the art of today form the viewpoint of film; its self-appointed aim is to show how the "seventh art" now irreversibly conditions our experience of both artworks and images. Images of works are accompanied by individual texts.
