Catalogue of solo exhibition by Zhou Jinhua at Schoeni Gallery, Hong Kong in 2007. Zhou's recent works have explored the various ways in which one may observe his characters; his paintings are created out of an aerial transposition of people and their personas. He has also referred to historical events, combining and unifying two separate eras on one canvas. In addition, he has experimented further with the concept of juxtaposing his personages with every day objects that are painted in the tradition of Cezanne's still-lifes. In this way, the viewer is given a reference from which to meaure this smaller world, and its population, as it travels and exists. Zhou Jinhua's stylistic representation of human beings as 'small particles in this enormous universe' compounds a complex understanding of the individual within a collective. Most significantly, his paintings are a reminder to the observer of the fragility and vulnerability of our notional existence. The present catalogue includes artist statement and biography.
