Narahara Ikko is a photographer whose first show in 1956, "Human Land," launched his career. The show combined photos of the abandoned coalmining island of Gunkanjima or "battleship island" and the volcano Sakurajima in Kyushu. In comparison to the "Realism Photography" movement of his time, his photographs were abstract landscapes that struck a chord with a younger generation of photographers.
