Volume One of catalogue published in conjunction with the retrospective exhibition of Yeh Chi Wei at Singapore Art Museum from 27 May to 12 September 2010. It sheds light on the artistic achievements and pivotal role of Yeh Chi Wei (1913-1981) in Singapore art history as an educator and leader of the Ten Men Group and other associations. Though Yeh received formal training as a painter in China, his aesthetics were radically shaped by his new life in Malaya following his move to Singapore in 1937. He travelled widely throughout Southeast Asia, collecting textiles and weavings from Borneo, ikat and Javanese batik, tribal sculptures and ceramics. The distinctive 'archaic' look of his oil paintings also reflect his interest in Chinese woodblock prints, Han dynasty carvings, decorations on bronze vessels, oracle bone and stone drum inscriptions.

Essays in Volume One examine his contributions and the influence of diverse cultural and historical resources in his paintngs. It also includes biographical portraits by his family and former students. Works in the exhibition are showcased in 120 colour plates, grouped by theme. Captions of artworks provided in both English and Simplified Chinese. Includes chronology of the Ten Men Group and artist's biography.

An accompanying CD-ROM contains Volume Two, which consists of essays of Volume One in Chinese, historical publications and relevant images. It is available separately at location code CD.001574.
