''The Yellow Box: Contemporary Calligraphy and Painting in Taiwan' was conceived by independent curator Chang Tsong-zung as a presentation of the concept of the 'yellow box', a form of appreciating calligraphy and painting and an interpretation of the spirit of literati art manifested in the exhibition designs of a modern art museum. It is a conceptual response to the 'white cube' form of the modern exhibition hall... This exhibition introduces five Taiwanese contemporary (calligraphy/painting) artists, each exhibiting highly individual and novel styles of creation.' - extracted from preface by Huang Tsai-lang.
A number of different formats have been included to show the range and special angles of literati connoisseurship. Several works have also been arranged to create an interactive situration. To open up the imaginative space of literati art, the exhibition has also invited artworks from Qiu Zhijie, Ye Fang and Caroline Chiu, artists working in China and Hong Kong. Artist biographies and notes on the designers of the Yellow Boxes and the other participating artists are provided in catalogue.
(The Yellow Box: Contemporary Calligraphy and Painting in Taiwan)
