Japanese artist Toko Shinoda studied calligraphy from the age of six, gradually evolving her own style of avant-garde expression. In the mid-1950s, Shinoda went to New York where she was introduced to the Abstract Expressionist School. It is not difficult to trace the School's influences in Shinoda's crisp and bold strokes, which later became hallmarks of her art.
The present monograph brings together 185 prints from the Tolman Collection, executed during the period 1978-1992. Accompanying articles provide a more detailed study of Shinoda's art. Biographical information is included. With a foreword by Prince Takamado of Japan.
