Published in conjunction with 'Turning Targets - Dobrak!', a group exhibition held as part of the 25th anniversary programme of Cemeti Art House, Yogyakarta.

For 'Turning Targets', the Bahasa Indonesian word dobrak was adopted as a point of departure. It implies breaking with tradition, breaking down pre-conceived perceptions, stereotypes and boundaries. 'The exhibition highlights collaborative processes and team work as an alternative to the individualism that is typically characteristic of the art world - the romantic assumption of the artist as a solitary genius making magic in his studio; a reminder that contemporary art practice has been increasingly informed by research, fieldwork and community-based interventions. For this anniversary show, we invite artists to partner with specialists from the field of social sciences such as anthropology, cultural studies and media studies to come up with a working brief together, i.e., pick a topic or subject matter they are interest (sic) in, research the subject together and produce a work or project together as individuals or as a team. - from the book introduction by Adeline Ooi
