This catalogue was published in conjunction with the exhibition 'VOC - Handle with Care' held at Ateneo San Basso (Piazza San Marco) from 9 June - 3 August 1999, under the auspices of the 48th Venice Biennale. For this exhibition, two artists from Taiwan and Mainland China provided discourses on 'the colonial history', making specific references to VOC (the Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie or Dutch East India Company).
Apart from an essay by the curator, respective interview with each artist, the artists' statements and thier biography are provided in both Chinese and English.
