Originated from serious water problems in the Yamuna River, WATERPOLIS, conceived by Ichi Ikeda, is installed at the anchor on Chandni Chowk as part of Delhi's '48°C Public.Art.Ecology' festival, aiming to raise awareness about issues relating to water conservation on the earth.
'Water is a substance that does not conform to one’s will and therefore becomes symbiotic and contains communicative qualities. WATERPOLIS must be just a practical model for creating society that all people can exercise one’s human rights equally on the environment surrounding them.
'Hoping to grasp metropolitan Delhi as "Waterpolis" where all people exist in equality with water, WATERPOLIS in Delhi is presented as the Future Water Vessel rowing in the stream flowing between "Metropolitan Mega Dream" and "Community Aspiration."
'"80 litres of water" implies "Water as Fundamental Human Right," and is the minimum ration needed to support the daily life of each person living on the Earth. However, actually three fourth of the world population can use only 50 litres of water or less because of low water supply. Through loading 80 liters Water Boxes as the most important components forming WATERPOLIS, Future Water Vessel will be under way to meet equality and democracy beyond cultural, religious and national differences.
'WATERPOLIS in Delhi launches out upon a remarkable movement from the only remaining Mughal water channel within the garden of the Town Hall at Chandni Chowk. Starting from this historical site where used to symbolise abundant water resources, WATERPOLIS might expand in all directions to meet water channels necessary for people living on the future earth.'
