As censorship of the arts in Vietnam is rife, performance art is steadily gaining ground. Ephemeral and spontaneous, it can fall under the radar of censors to reach a wide audience. Performance art first took off in Vietnam in the mid-1990s with artists such as Tran Luong who continue to push the boundaries of acceptable social and political commentaries. In 2006 Tran Luong organized the first 'Dom Dom Performance Festival' in Hanoi, and 22 Vietnamese artists participated.
